  Erwin Pottery

Following the closing of Southern Potteries, Inc. in 1957, Negatha Peterson, a painter for many years at Southern Potteries, Inc., purchased a large portion of the original Blue Ridge molds. Subsequently, the molds were used by Mrs. Peterson in the production of Erwin Pottery. As the talented owner and artist of Erwin Pottery, she rightfully takes her place along with Cash, Clouse, Cherokee, and Maries potteries in the production of hand painted items in the Blue Ridge tradition. See hiddens and backstamps as well as additional info at the bottom of this page.

We have a number of pieces from two childdren's teasets in the FOXGRAPE and CRAB APPLE patterns made by Erwin Pottery while it was owned by Negatha Peterson. If you are interested go to Site Info to let us know you'd like us to list the items!

FOR VIEWER REFERENCE ONLY

It was our understanding that Erwin Pottery went out of business in 2005 and many of the molds Mrs. Peterson acquired from SPI and Cash Family were sold at auction. However, according to Gary Smith, ownership of Erwin Pottery changed hands in 2005. Mr. Smith stated that he and his wife purchased the Erwin Pottery name and major assets including the backstamps, the majority of Mrs. Peterson's molds, and a large number of molds original to Cash Family Pottery. Mr. Smith continued to say that although no one will ever paint like Negatha, the new Erwin Pottery employs artists who paint in the same style and tradition. Consequently, Erwin Pottery, begun by Negatha Peterson, is still in operation under new ownership.

When we list ERWIN POTTERY items for sale, we will make every effort to determine whether an item was made during or after Mrs. Peterson's ownership of the pottery.

Previously purchased ERWIN POTTERY items are pictured below as reference:

Frequently, but not always, Mrs. Peterson marked her pieces with an Erwin Pottery backstamp as well as her initials (or first name and last initial) near the design area. See our hidden of the apple creamer above.

Mrs. Peterson personally told us that, for a brief period in the mid-1980s, she used an original Blue Ridge backstamp with the word REPRO hand-written below it. Thus, the REPRO mark is established as a legitimate Erwin Pottery backstamp and, when found, offers an excellent estimate of the time frame during which the item was made!
