  Erwin Pottery   |
Following the closing of Southern Potteries, Inc. in 1957, Negatha Peterson (who painted for many years at SPI) purchased many of the original Blue Ridge molds which have been used by her in the production of Erwin Pottery items. As the talented owner and artist of Erwin Pottery, she rightfully takes her place along with Cash, Clouse, Cherokee, and Maries potteries producing hand-painted items in the Blue Ridge (SPI) tradition. See backstamps and additional info at the bottom of secure store page. (It is our understanding that Erwin Pottery went out of business in 2006 and many of the molds Mrs. Peterson had accquired from SPI and Cash Family were sold at auction.)
Erwin Pottery Chick Pitcher - #7486 - Lovely painting, bright shiny glaze. Made from a chick pitcher mold previously used by Southern Potteries, Inc., makers of Blue Ridge. (According to Negatha Peterson, owner of Erwin Pottery, she purchased a number of molds from SPI after the company closed in 1957.) Free of chips, cracks, and crazing. Marked with the Blue Ridge lone pine and mountain logo including the word REPRO (handwritten underglaze and original to the making of the pitcher ~ see image below) as used by Mrs. Peterson for a very limited time during the mid-1980s. This mark clearly establishes the time frame during which it was made. If you are not familiar with this shape, note that the pitcher spout is the open beak. Excellent and the only chick-shaped pitcher we've personally seen from Erwin Pottery with the REPRO mark! 55.00

Ownership of Erwin Pottery changed hands in 2005. According to Gary Smith, he and his wife bought the major assets, name and backstamp for Erwin Pottery from Negatha Peterson, including the majority of Mrs. Peterson s molds and about 2000 molds from the Cash Pottery. He went on to say that although no one will ever paint like Negatha, the new Erwin Pottery has artists that paint in the same style and tradition. Negatha Peterson s Erwin Pottery name and tradition is still in production. When we list ERWIN POTTERY items for sale, we will make every effort to determine whether an item was made during or after Mrs. Peterson's ownership of the pottery.
Previously purchased ERWIN POTTERY items are pictured below as reference:
Frequently, but not always, Mrs. Peterson s pieces were marked with an Erwin Pottery backstamp as well as her initials near the design area. See our image of the apple creamer above. Mrs. Peterson personally told us that, for a brief period in the mid-1980s, she used an original Blue Ridge backstamp with the word 'REPRO' hand-written below it. The REPRO mark not only establishes who made the item, it also gives a good estimate of the time frame in which it was made!
