AGE No known records were left by any of the Erwin, TN, area potteries indicating when particular designs were painted. It is the general consensus that the best way to determine the age of an item is to know when a piece was first owned new. When known by us, the dates each pottery was hand-painting are given and can be useful in determining the time frame during which a particular item could have been made. Since backstamps, once introduced, were often used throughout the remaining life of the pottery, it is our belief that backstamps are not a reliable way to identify the specific date an item was made.
